Alp D Huez

Today we are saying a huge thank you to Jonathan Oddy, who is taking on the Great North Swim for the second year in a row for The Christie charity. Jonathan is a former patient of The Christie, having been diagnosed with bilateral testicular cancer in 2009/2010, after nearly two years of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatments, Jonathan was given the brilliant news that there was no evidence of disease, and he has been cancer free since then.

Speaking of his reasons for fundraising for The Christie, Jonathan says that “During my treatment, the course of radiotherapy was a choice (part of the optional protocols available given my first cancer staging). However the nine weeks of BEP chemotherapy were not optional. Whilst testicular cancer is curable, without the chemotherapy treatment the relapse I suffered would have killed me - I would be dead.

This last statement is very important, to me clearly, but also as a message to the wider world. The only reason that the BEP protocol was discovered to work so well for testicular cancer was because of global research projects, and because of places like The Christie. Not just for their care and excellence in treatment, but also for their research and training facilities.

It is through people and charities like The Christie that these improvements are made, which is why I have chosen to fundraise for The Christie.” To read Jonathan’s full story, you can visit his Just Giving page here https://buff.ly/2V9cE4B, and if you wish to join Jonathan in June at the Great North Swim, you can read more on the event here https://buff.ly/2F9YQOT
