With nearly 1500 participants, the Outlaw is a popular Iron Distance event very close to home. The Outlaw in the past has only had sunny conditions and normally makes for fast racing. With 2 RFS athletes racing this year, they definitely didn’t get it easy. The weather was horrible, in the heat wave of 2018 they literally did get the only day it rained solidly all day. The swim course was adapted to suit the high winds which made for slightly slower swim times than excepted however. Both Matt and Paul completed the race just within their target times.
Paul was supported by his family in the lead up to the race, he trained around work and family commitments, he had a very understanding partner that allowed him to move into their new house and the set his turbo room up while the rest of the things stayed stacked in boxes and the DIY was put on hold. Ironman training is about focused time specific training and gaining a good balance of the Ironman requirements and family time is hugely important. RFS training plans are designed to work around your lifestyle to achieve the goals you have.
Matt did Outlaw Holkham in prep for the full Outlaw and came 10th in his age group. Matt had a great bike leg at the full Outlaw and being a Derbyshire based rider the rain didn’t put him off followed by a run he was happy with. Well done.
Both athletes finished with a smile and itching to do more events, after some well-deserved rest both will be planning the next stage of their racing and finishing the tri season with some half ironman distance events.
