Matlock Swimming Club River Swims

Matlock Swimming Club River Swims

This year was another year where Matlock and District Swimming Club swimmers and RFS athletes got wet, got cold and gave it ago. We are incredibly proud of the young club swimmers that have  braved the open water. Their confidence is something we can all learn from, their spirit to go out there and give it a try is fantastic, we had as young as 12 young old competing in the 1500m and 9 years in the 500m, they have all transferred their pool skills and endurance base fitness into new experiences that will definitely benefit them as in the future. Open water is growing so quickly in the UK and we are pleased to be able to pass down our own personal experience to them and give them opportunities to excel. Massive thank you goes to Karl Webster as always for the organisation and equipment to make the swim possible. Tom Burch won the 1500m on the second river swim, with little experience but pure determination and hard work. The river swims are very much a family affair and also alongside Tom, John Burch used the swims to enhance his Ironman training, build confidence and get some race practice in before Ironman Barcelona. We had several athletes and masters swimmers putting out personal best performances and some experiencing their first ever open water events. Craig has had one to one lessons with us for a while and didn’t believe he would ever be able to master the open water, but he finished the 500m river swim with a massive smile. High Peak Triathletes also swam well; in the future it would be great to see more of them down at Matlock as the open water race experience is so useful. Well done to all those involved. Gary McCaffery has done some brilliant photo’s of the kids and adults in action, see the link, prints are available at request.
